General’s Cedar Point #333
As its name suggests, the Cedar Point is made with genuine incense cedar, complete with an aromatic cedar smell. Its simple design showcases the materials. Most importantly, the Cedar Pointe’s barrel is lacquer free and 100% natural, so as you write with it over time, the oils in your skin will create a patina specific to your grip. Wow.
Musgrave Tennessee Red
Most modern cedar pencils are made with the more abundant and easier to use California Incense Cedar, but Musgrave is bringing the old school back with their Tennessee Red pencil which uses Eastern Red Cedar (the company phased out this wood in the 60’s and 70’s). The Red’s simple matte clear coat showcases the gorgeous cedar, and you’ll have to restrain yourself from sharpening too much because the aroma of this pencil is off the charts. If you are interested in that freshly-sharpened pencil smell, this is THE ONE.
Caran d’Ache 348 Swiss Beech Wood Pencil (348.272)
The 348’s dark brown barrel isn’t stained—this pencil’s dark beech wood, sourced from the Jura forest of Switzerland, is naturally a rich, chocolatey brown. When you sharpen it, be sure and catch a whiff of its complex aroma with hints of nutmeg and brown sugar. Pencil lovers agree: the hefty weight and warm aroma of the wooden barrel make this pencil a true luxury item.
Blackwing Natural
The most recent addition to Blackwing’s standard lineup of pencils, the Natural maxes out the line with its extra-firm graphite for those long-form writing sessions. The exposed genuine Incense-cedar barrel gives it that classic pencil look, but with the added bonus of Blackwing’s iconic square ferrule.
Viarco Backyard and Gardens of Portugal Scented Pencils
These cedar wood pencils are delicately scented with aromas inspired by the gardens and backyards of Portugal, where Viarco is based. The pencil company partnered with a perfume designer to expand upon the pencil’s “intimate scent of childhood” by adding a range of scents including Orange Blossom, Lily of the Valley, Jasmine, Peony, and more. They consider it “a small tribute to our grandparents ́ homes.”
